Hall of Justice
Crown Point, IN
The Lake County Criminal Courts Building; located in Crown Point, Indiana, was a colonial revival built in 1920. The gangster John Dillinger was arraigned here in 1934 the day before his infamous escape from the old Lake County Jail next door.
Once considered for individual listing in the National Register of Historic Places, this building was inevitably turned down, and in 1997 was scheduled to be demolished and turned into a parking lot. Captivated by the beauty of the old Courts Building, my husband and I purchased and renovated the building, saving it from its fate.
Today, this unique building features a spacious marble dance floor, 20-foot-tall ceilings with original skylights, a gorgeous 7-foot crystal chandelier, 10-foot gold frame mirrors and brass candelabras throughout the room.
For the past 30+ years this building has been a venue for hundreds of weddings, anniversary parties, baby showers, etc. In that time we have watched countless families, and their friends fall in love in with this building just like we did all those years ago.
